What Size RV or Boat Storage Space Do I Need? A Guide to Choosing the Right Size

Here at Charlotte County RV & Boat Storage, one of the questions we hear most often is, “What size space do I need?” Whether you’re storing an RV, boat, or trailer, you want to make sure you have enough room without renting more space than you need. With several storage sizes and both covered and open options available, choosing the right space can feel a little overwhelming. The good news is that finding the right fit starts with a few simple measurements, we are here to walk you through it!

Finding a place to store your RV, boat, or trailer is one thing. Finding a storage space that’s actually the right size is another.

Too small, and your equipment may not fit within the designated boundaries. Too large, and you may be paying for space you don’t need.

So, what size RV or boat storage space do you need?

The answer starts with one simple step: measure your equipment before choosing your storage space.

At Charlotte County RV & Boat Storage in Punta Gorda, we offer several storage sizes ranging from 12′ x 30′ to 13′ x 40′, with both covered and open storage options available.

Here’s how to determine which size may be appropriate for your RV, boat, or trailer.

Start With the Actual Size of Your RV, Boat, or Trailer

Before choosing a storage space, measure the equipment you’re actually going to store.

Don’t rely only on the length listed in your owner’s manual or manufacturer specifications. What matters for storage is the complete footprint of the equipment you’re putting into the space.

For an RV or trailer, consider:

  • Overall length
  • Overall width
  • Hitch and other attached equipment
  • Any equipment that remains attached while stored
  • Anything else that could extend beyond the main body of the unit

For a boat, remember that you’re usually storing the boat and trailer together.

Measure the complete combination rather than just the boat itself.

Don’t forget about width

Length isn’t the only measurement that matters.

A 40-foot storage space may have plenty of length for your equipment but still not provide enough width. Likewise, a wider storage space may be a better match for equipment with a larger overall footprint.

Measure the widest part of your RV, boat, or trailer and compare it with the published width of the storage space.

How Do I Know Which Storage Size I Need?

A simple way to narrow down your options is to compare your equipment’s measurements with the dimensions of the available spaces.

For example, if your equipment is longer than 30 feet, you’ll want to look at the available 35-foot or 40-foot options rather than assuming a 30-foot space will work.

If width is your primary concern, compare your equipment’s widest point with the available 12-, 13-, and 15-foot widths.

Remember that your equipment needs to fit completely within the dimensions of the space you rent.

When you’re between sizes, it’s better to discuss your actual measurements with the storage facility rather than guessing.

Why Measuring Your Equipment Matters

Choosing the wrong storage size can create a problem after you’ve already moved your RV, boat, or trailer to the facility.

At Charlotte County RV & Boat Storage, your RV, boat, trailer, and any attached equipment must fit completely within the published dimensions of the space you rent.

Equipment may not extend beyond the designated boundaries of the rented space.

If your unit exceeds the rented space, you will be required to relocate to an appropriately sized space, subject to availability, at your expense.

That’s why measuring ahead of time is so important.

A few minutes with a tape measure can help you choose the appropriate space before moving your equipment in.

Covered or Open Storage: Which Should You Choose?

Once you’ve determined the size you need, you’ll also need to decide whether covered or open storage is the better fit for your situation.

Covered storage provides a roof over your RV, boat, or other equipment while it’s being stored. Several of our covered spaces also have 30-amp electrical service available.

Open storage provides a designated storage space on our crushed-shell gravel surface. Our open spaces are designed with crushed shell and no dust.

The right option depends on your equipment, your storage needs, and the size that works for your unit.

What About 30-Amp Electrical Service?

If having electrical service available is important to you, several of our covered spaces offer 30-amp metered electrical service.

Electrical service is available on select spaces and is billed separately according to metered usage.

When you’re comparing spaces, make sure you ask about electrical availability for the specific space you’re considering.
