So let’s talk about a few simple ways to give it a little extra protection this hurricane season.
Your Boat or RV Doesn’t Have to Be in the Middle of the Action
Florida weather can be tough on just about everything.
The intense sun, heavy rain, humidity, salt air, and occasional tropical weather all take their toll over time. Even when a hurricane never makes it anywhere near Charlotte County, your RV or boat is still sitting outside through months of Florida weather.

And don’t forget all the little things.
Bring in cushions, electronics, life jackets, canvas, and anything else that isn’t meant to spend a tropical storm outside.
It’s amazing how much stuff you suddenly notice when you’re trying to prepare a boat for a storm.
For your RV
Your RV has a few things to think about, too.
Start outside:
- Retract awnings and secure slide-out toppers.
- Close and latch windows, vents, and roof hatches.
- Bring in or secure outdoor furniture, grills, equipment, and other loose items.
- Check your tires and make sure the RV is properly positioned and secured.
Then take a quick look inside.
Secure anything that could shift around, protect valuables, and take a few photos of the interior and exterior. Those photos can be useful documentation for your insurance records if you ever need them.
And, of course, follow your RV manufacturer’s recommendations and any storm instructions from your storage facility.
Don’t Forget About Your Hurricane Plan
Here’s something that can get lost in all the talk about protecting property:
Your boat or RV is replaceable. You aren’t.
If an evacuation is ordered, your evacuation plan should come first.
Charlotte County encourages residents to know their evacuation zone, understand where they would go, and leave before dangerous conditions arrive. RV owners should pay particular attention to evacuation orders and avoid waiting until tropical-storm-force winds are already affecting the area.
In other words, don’t wait until the roads are packed and the weather is deteriorating to figure out what you’re going to do.
Have the plan ahead of time.
Then, if a storm does threaten the area, you can spend less time worrying about logistics and more time focusing on your family.
