August in Southwest Florida is hot. Really hot. But that doesn’t mean your RV needs to spend the month sitting still.
One of the best things about owning an RV in Charlotte County is how many great destinations are within an easy drive of Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte. You don’t need two weeks off, a cross-country itinerary or months of planning. Sometimes you just need a free Saturday, a full tank of fuel and somewhere you’ve never been.
We call it the 2-Hour Adventure Rule: pick a destination roughly two hours or less from home, leave early, explore for the day and stay overnight if you want to turn a day trip into a miniature vacation.
Here are six places worth pointing the RV toward this August.
1. Myakka River State Park: Find a Little Old Florida
If your idea of Florida involves more than beaches and palm trees, Myakka River State Park deserves a spot on your August list.
This is a completely different side of Southwest Florida, filled with wetlands, prairie, wildlife and the Myakka River winding through it all.
Get an early start before the afternoon heat settles in. Explore the park, watch for wildlife, take some pictures and enjoy a landscape that feels worlds away from the development along the coast.
It’s close enough to Charlotte County that you don’t have to make a major trip out of it.
That’s precisely the point.

Best for: Nature, wildlife and photography
August strategy: Arrive early and plan around the heat and afternoon storms.
2. Boca Grande: Make the Journey Part of the Day
Sometimes you don’t need a complicated itinerary. Head toward Gasparilla Island and Boca Grande. The drive itself slows things down as you approach the Gulf. Once there, spend the day exploring the island, visiting the beach, grabbing lunch and enjoying one of Southwest Florida’s most recognizable coastal communities. And don’t be in a hurry. That’s one of the rules.
A good road trip isn’t always about how many things you can squeeze into eight hours. Sometimes it’s about finding somewhere interesting and staying awhile.
Adventure level: Easy
Best for: Beaches, exploring and a laid-back day
August strategy: Morning beach time, midday lunch and plenty of sunscreen.
3. Sanibel & Captiva: Go Shell Hunting
There are Florida beaches, and then there are places people specifically travel to Florida to experience. Sanibel and Captiva have long been famous for beautiful Gulf scenery and shelling, making the islands a natural destination when you’re starting from Charlotte County.
Pack beach chairs, water, a cooler and something to collect shells in. Leave Punta Gorda early enough to enjoy the cooler part of the morning along the Gulf. And don’t turn it into a race.
Explore. Stop somewhere you’ve never eaten. Take the long way when it looks interesting. Before heading out, check current beach access, parking and local visitor information, since conditions and access can change.

Best for: Beach lovers and shell hunters
August strategy: Get there early and beat the strongest heat.
4. Everglades City: See a Completely Different Florida
Want something that doesn’t feel anything like Punta Gorda? Head south.
Everglades City puts you at the edge of one of the most unusual ecosystems in America. This is a great destination for an eco-tour, boat tour or other Everglades adventure. Mangroves replace manicured beaches. Wildlife becomes part of the attraction. And the landscape reminds you just how wild parts of Florida still are.
It’s exactly what the 2-Hour Adventure is supposed to accomplish:

Best for: Wildlife, boating and exploring
August strategy: Reserve morning activities whenever possible and keep an eye on the weather.
5. Naples: Make a Day of It
Not every adventure requires hiking boots and mosquito spray. Sometimes you want to explore somewhere new, find a great restaurant, walk around town and finish the day near the Gulf.
Naples makes an easy Southwest Florida road trip because you can build the day around whatever interests you.
Beach?
Absolutely.
Shopping?
Easy.
Good food?
You won’t have trouble finding it.
Or forget the itinerary entirely. Drive down, explore and decide what you’re doing when you get there. There’s something wonderfully liberating about occasionally having no reservation and no schedule.

Best for: Couples, food, shopping and the Gulf
August strategy: Mix outdoor activities with air-conditioned stops during the hottest part of the afternoon.
6. Arcadia: Trade the Beach for Old Florida
Here’s the wildcard.
Instead of driving toward the Gulf, head inland. Arcadia offers a very different experience from Florida’s coastal communities, with a historic downtown, antiques and an unmistakably old-Florida atmosphere. That’s what makes it interesting.
If most of your adventures involve beaches, boats and the Gulf, spend a Saturday doing the opposite. Walk around downtown. Hunt through antique shops. Find somewhere local for lunch. Take roads you normally have no reason to travel.
The destination doesn’t always need to be spectacular. Sometimes different is enough.

Best for: History, antiques and something different
August strategy: Save indoor exploring for the hottest part of the day.

Here’s your challenge for the rest of the summer.
Open a map.
Put your finger on Punta Gorda and look at everything you can reach in roughly two hours.
Then pick somewhere you’ve never been.
Don’t spend three weeks planning it. Don’t create a spreadsheet. Don’t wait for the perfect weekend.
Go.
Leave early Saturday morning. Take the RV if the destination makes sense for it. Explore all day. Find somewhere interesting to eat. Stay overnight if you want to stretch the adventure into Sunday.
Then come home and pick another destination for next month.
Because owning an RV shouldn’t only be about the enormous trips you take once or twice a year. It should also be about the random Saturday morning when somebody says:
“Where should we go today?”
