1. Launch Early and Explore Charlotte Harbor
There is something different about Charlotte Harbor early in the morning. The water is calmer, the temperature hasn’t reached its afternoon peak, and much of Southwest Florida is still waking up. Launch the boat early and make the journey part of the destination. Cruise the harbor, explore the shoreline or pack breakfast and find a quiet place to drop anchor. Charlotte County has numerous public boat ramps providing access to Charlotte Harbor, the Peace and Myakka Rivers and surrounding waters.
August tip: Go early. Summer heat and afternoon thunderstorms make morning one of the best windows for being on the water.
2. Go Island Hopping to a Beach You Can’t Drive To
Want an adventure that feels considerably farther from home than it really is? Point the boat toward one of the area’s barrier islands.
Don Pedro Island and Little Gasparilla Island offer something increasingly difficult to find in Florida: beautiful island destinations that aren’t simply another stop along the highway. There is no bridge carrying a line of cars to Don Pedro Island State Park. The island is accessible by boat, which is precisely part of the fun.
Pack the cooler, towels, sunscreen and snorkeling gear. Beach the boat, step onto the sand and spend a few hours enjoying the Gulf before heading home. Sometimes the best reason to own a boat is reaching places everyone else can’t.
3. Make August a Charlotte Harbor Fishing Month
If the fishing rods have been gathering dust in the garage, August gives you an excuse to change that. Charlotte Harbor and the surrounding Gulf waters support an extraordinary variety of fish. Depending on where and how you fish, August opportunities can include mangrove snapper, redfish, trout and numerous offshore species. Nearshore reefs and rock ledges can also provide plenty of action during the summer.
The trick in August is timing. Rather than waiting until midday, launch around sunrise. You’ll avoid some of the day’s most intense heat and give yourself plenty of time to fish before Florida’s familiar afternoon weather begins developing. 4. Take the RV on a Southwest Florida Weekend Escape

This may be the easiest adventure on the list, but don’t underestimate it.
Pick an evening with favorable weather, load dinner into the boat and head onto Charlotte Harbor before sunset. No itinerary.
No destination. Just enough fuel to explore and enough time to find the right spot before the sky changes. Southwest Florida summer sunsets can be spectacular, especially when distant clouds from the day’s storms catch the evening light. Then turn toward home as the last light disappears over the Gulf. That’s a pretty good way to end an August day.
